Russian mug, gifted to Philly philanthropist nearly 130 years ago, hitting the auction block

A hand-crafted tankard being auctioned off by Freeman’s on Feb. 24 was given by Russian Czar Alexander III to Alexander Biddle as a thank you gift for the philanthropic aid he provided Russia during the famine of 1891 and 1892. The silver mug is covered in brightly-colored enamel pieces.
