Philly residents urged to stay home for Christmas due to COVID-19 surge

Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Bettigole implored families to avoid holding Christmas gatherings in 2021, citing a rapid increase in COVID-19 infections that occurred in the weeks after the Thanksgiving holiday. The daily average of new cases in Philadelphia has doubled since the beginning of December and officials are wary of the highly infectious omicron variant compounding the spread of the delta variant.
