More than one million people have died from overdoses during the opioid crisis, research finds

New research from the National Center for Health Statistics found that 932,364 died from drug overdoses in the United States from 1999-2020. Earlier research from NCHS found nearly 100,000 fatal overdoses between April 2020 and April 2021. Amid an epidemic of opioid abuse throughout the United States, these reports suggest that these fatal overdoses are on the rise.
